Vikings trying to narrow down Kaare Vedvik’s role

We still don’t know exactly what Kaare Vedvik’s role will be for the Vikings after they traded a fifth-round pick for him last week.

He could be the punter or kicker, or he could punt, kick long field goals and handle kickoffs.

Of course, there could be other options as well, but it’s now up to the Vikings to figure out how Vedvik fits in on the special teams unit and how that impacts punter Matt Wile and kicker Dan Bailey, one of whom will likely be out of a job.

“He could be good at everything,” Vikings special teams coordinator Marwan Maalouf said Wednesday. “I think the key for Kaare’s success is that we narrow down what fits us and what he’s really good at, and then that’s where he gets his reps. It’s so hard to ask one guy to do everything. It is. I mean, even going from a pregame routine, the pregame isn’t long enough for somebody to do everything. But if we can carve out the right roles for him, I think he’ll help us.”

In the team’s preseason Week 2 game, we saw Vedvik punt three times, as well as connect on an extra-point attempt.

We’ll likely know more after the team’s preseason Week 3 against the Cardinals on Saturday.
