The Vikings signed quarterback Kirk Cousins to a two-year extension this offseason, keeping him in Minnesota until 2022.
Quarterback isn’t an essential need for the Vikings, who have many other holes on their roster. But looking for their next quarterback is never a bad idea and Mike Renner from Pro Football Focus thinks the Vikings will do so in the 2020 NFL Draft.
With the team’s second third-round pick (105th overall), Renner has the Vikings drafting Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm.
Here’s what Renner wrote about the pick:
Fromm’s quick decision-making and risk avoidance will play in the NFL. He’s just extremely limited from an arm perspective. That’s attractive, though, when it comes to a backup quarterback who can win games in a pinch.
Fromm certainly has more upside as a backup than current backup Sean Mannion does, and could be groomed to be Cousins’ replacement if everything goes right.
In three years at George, Fromm has threw 78 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He’s not in the top-tier of quarterbacks in the 2020 class, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Vikings did use a mid-round pick on a player like Fromm.
