Vikings sign punter Britton Colquitt, release Matt Wile

The saga surrounding the Vikings special teams unit.

A day after releasing Kaare Vedvik and choosing Dan Bailey as their kicker, the Vikings released Matt Wile on Sunday and signed former Browns punter Britton Colquitt.

Wile, 27, spent one season with Minnesota and averaged 45.2 yards per punt.

It was clear the Vikings weren’t high on Wile this training camp, trying to replace him as holder by Chad Beebe, and as punter by first Vedvik (somewhat). Now, they’ve replaced them with Colquitt.

Colquitt, 34, spent the last three seasons with the Cleveland Browns and the six seasons before with the Denver Broncos.

He was released by the Browns on “cut day.” Instead, the Browns elected to go with Jamie Gillan as their punter.

We’ll hear from the Vikings this week by why the move was made, but the move itself doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
