Vikings select TE Irv Smith Jr. with 2nd-round pick

Vikings fans have to be happy.

In the second-round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Vikings selected Alabama tight end Irv Smith Jr. with the No. 50 pick.

This adds depth to the tight end position and Smith projects as a starter in 2020 with Kyle Rudolph in the last year of his contract. He should help immediately on the offensive side of the ball and gives Kirk Cousins another target.

Smith finished with 44 catches, 710 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

He was considered a first-round pick by many. It was actually somewhat of a surprise that he didn’t go 32 overall to the Patriots with Rob Gronkowski retiring.

Smith ranked as Luke Easterling’s 48th prospect over at Draft Wire, so this pick is right in that range.

This is the second offensive player the Vikings have taken in as many rounds. With their first-round pick, the Vikings selected offensive lineman Garrett Bradbury.
