Minnesota’s cornerback unit was certainly interesting in 2020.
Mike Hughes and Holton Hill both went down with injuries. Cameron Dantzler and Jeff Gladney were forced to step up, and the two experienced growing pains in their rookie seasons, with Dantzler coming along strong towards the end of the season.
The Vikings added CB Patrick Peterson this offseason. He should be a big help. Minnesota also signed Mackensie Alexander, who can slot in as a nickel corner.
But the team could always get better at one of the most important positions on defense. On Saturday of the draft, Minnesota tried to do just that, taking California CB Camryn Bynum in the fourth round of the draft.
Bynum certainly has upside. He only played four games in his final collegiate season. But before that, he had at least one pick and 10 passes defended in his other three collegiate seasons. He also ran a 4.49 40-yard dash.
With Gladney’s status up in the air after his arrest, it makes sense for the Vikings to add depth to corner. Bynum can compete for reps with Harrison Hand and others in 2021. He joins a cornerback unit that could improve greatly from the previous season.
