Vikings salary cap update, where does the team stand?

Despite having little space in the salary cap for much of the time, Minnesota has had an eventful offseason.

The Vikings traded away Stefon Diggs, and now have a total of 12 draft picks. The team also signed Michael Pierce, who can add an important dimension to the defense.

With the way the salary cap plays out, the Vikings possibly have a move or two left to make.

Minnesota has just over $12.9 million in space, according to the Pioneer Press’ Chris Tomasson, after players’ signing bonuses and roster bonuses. According to Over The Cap, that number would put them at 20th in the league.

Also per Tomasson, the Vikings probably need about $4.5 million in salary cap space to sign rookies from the NFL Draft. That means the team has over $8 million to spend on one last signing, or possible several bargain signings.

If Minnesota could restructure with Riley Reiff, and extend safety Anthony Harris, those moves would almost certainly free up space so Minnesota could sign someone more in the ballpark of $15 million.

The Vikings could use a veteran cornerback or offensive lineman who could get starting-caliber reps next season.
