Vikings release Marcus Sherels just 3 games after signing him

Just three weeks after the Vikings brought back punt returner Marcus Sherels, the team announced it released him on Tuesday afternoon.

Sherels, 32, has appeared in 123 games with the Vikings since 2010. He holds the franchise’s record in punt return yards with 2,480 and punt return touchdowns with five.

We’ll likely see second-year cornerback Mike Hughes take over punt-returning duties.

The Vikings have an open spot on their roster, and many are speculating that spot will go to wide receiver Davion Davis, who is currently on the practice squad. With Adam Thielen unlikely to play on Thursday night against the Saints, the Vikings have just three healthy receivers with Stefon Diggs, Bisi Johnson and Laquon Treadwell.
