Vikings release Kaare Vedvik after trading 5th-round pick for him

Less than a month after the Vikings traded a fifth-round pick for Kaare Vedvik, they are set to release him, per multiple reports.

This is not a good look for the Vikings considering their history with kickers. To give up a fifth-round pick for a player and cut him before the season starts, well, that’s not ideal.

The Vikings will have Dan Bailey kick and Matt Wile punt for the second-straight season.

Vedvik was 0-for-2 in his first preseason game with the Vikings and 1-for-2 in his second on Thursday night against the Bills. Meanwhile, Bailey was a perfect 3-for-3 despite reports of him struggling in training camp practices.

The Vikings have now used fifth-round picks in two of the last seasons on kickers who didn’t work out. In 2018, the Vikings drafted Daniel Carlson who was cut two weeks into the season. And now their 2020 pick will go to the Ravens for a player who didn’t make the final 53 as either a kicker or punter.

It is worth adding, however, that the Vikings shouldn’t have kept him just because they gave up a fifth-round pick for him. So in a way, they might the right move. We’ll see if he ends up on the team’s practice squad.
