Vikings release CB Bené Benwikere and WR Jordan Taylor

The Vikings have started to trim their roster down before this weekend’s deadline.

The first two casualties were cornerback Bené Benwikere and wide receiver Jordan Taylor.

The team signed Benwikere after Holton Hill’s second suspension was announced, but Benwikere must not have separated himself in camp. It also could be a sign that second-year cornerback Mike Hughes could be ready to play sooner rather than later after recovering from a torn ACL. The Vikings removed Hughes from the PUP list on Monday.

As for Taylor, this one is pretty disappointing. A lot of people (me included) thought he could make a serious run for the team’s WR3 spot, but that just didn’t happen. Taylor barely saw the field in preseason despite his familiarity with Gary Kubiak.

The Vikings signed Taylor to a one-year, $720,000 deal this offseason. There was no penalty to release him. Benwikere signed a one-year, $1 million deal. There was no penalty for releasing him, either.
