Vikings QB Kirk Cousins talks about WR Justin Jefferson’s development

The Vikings lost their leading receiver from 2019 in Stefon Diggs. The team then drafted a wide receiver in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft: Justin Jefferson.

So why is Bisi Johnson currently the definitive No. 2 wideout in training camp and not Jefferson?

Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins isn’t worried about Jefferson.

“It’s not like a dramatic, ‘Oh my goodness, he’s like a 10th-year player and usually guys are absolutely clueless,'” quarterback Kirk Cousins told Courtney Cronin of ESPN. “I think he’s just doing a nice job here getting the play call in the huddle, getting out, getting lined up, knowing where to go, what to do, the depth to go on the route and ultimately why you bring him in is for the natural stuff.”

Cronin reported that Jefferson is behind Johnson, a second-year player, on the depth chart currently.

“Learning the plays takes time no matter how good you are but when the instincts can take over and you can make great plays, that’s what you’re looking for,” Cousins said of Jefferson, via ESPN. “He’s shown an ability to do that so we have to continue to get more reps, get more plays together, find out where he’s most comfortable and certainly keep him in that comfort zone early in the season.”
