Vikings hire Nate Kaeding as kicking coach

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer hinted that the team would hire a kicking coaching after the team’s kicking woes through the years.

John Carney campaigned for the job.

On Wednesday, we found out that it will be former NFL kicker Nate Kaeding.

Kaeding kicked nine seasons in the league for the Chargers and Dolphins. He’s a two-time Pro Bowler and was an All-Pro in 2009. He made 86.2 percent of his kicks in his career.

“I’ve gotten to know him on a personal level because we know some mutual people at Iowa. He is another set of eyes,” Vikings special teams coordinator Marwan Maalouf said. “He has done a real good job so far of communicating with players and making sure everybody is on the same page. I think that is really important that we are all talking the same language. He is somebody I could send with the specialists and I can concentrate of other aspects as well as the specialists.”

With Blair Walsh, Daniel Carlson and even Dan Bailey to a certain extent last season, the Vikings have had some horrible performances at the kicking position. Having Kaeding, who went through a bit of a rough stretch in his career, should help Bailey. Bringing him on board certainly can’t hurt.
