Vikings GM Rick Spielman: ‘Stats mean nothing to us’

Statistically, Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins had a great 2018.

Cousins threw for 4,298 yards, a career-high 30 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions.

But the Vikings finished the season 8-7-1, a huge disappointment considering many in the football world pegged the Vikings as Super Bowl favorites.

“Stats mean nothing to us,” Vikings GM Rick Spielman said via the Pioneer Press. “It means nothing to Coach (Mike Zimmer). … Cousins had a phenomenal year statistic-wise but we’ve got to win games, and that’s what it comes down to, and that’s what we’re focusing on.”

In the NFL, normally good stats from your quarterback leads to wins. It’s not like basketball where you can be a “good stats, bad team” guy. But 2018 was an outlier.

Cousins wasn’t as clutch as the Vikings would have hoped, especially in big games, and late in games.

There is plenty of offensive talent for Cousins to have another statistical great season, but nobody will remember it if the Vikings don’t win games.
