Vikings GM Rick Spielman: “never say never” on Everson Griffen returning

Everson Griffen voided his contract with the Vikings this offseason. He later announced on Instagram that he would be leaving the team in free agency, but so far, he has yet to sign anywhere.

A source told Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press that the defensive end wanted to get the word out to teams that he was available, even though there was a chance he could come back to the Vikings.

So Griffen is still a free agent, and the Vikings have some cap space left for 2020 and beyond. Vikings general manager Rick Spielman went on the podcast PFT PM to discuss:

“It is hard to say right now where everything is at and where we are at, until things become more normalized, I will never say never on a player,” Spielman said on the podcast. “I know it will be very hard on a salary cap standpoint. I don’t want to get into the business side of it, but right now I know where our roster is.”

That’s not a quote that exactly tells you Griffen will be wearing purple and gold in 2020. However, it’s better than Spielman saying the team has moved on or that the Vikings are focused on other things.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, while speaking on the radio at 950 KJR, said the Seahawks have had recent communication with Griffen, and not with defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who played for Seattle in 2019 and is now a free agent.
