Vikings free agent S Anthony Harris departing for Eagles this offseason

Last offseason, Minnesota made sure to keep Vikings S Anthony Harris around. Harris was given the franchise tag and he eventually signed his tender.

But in 2020, Harris had a down year. Despite a very good body of work, his recent play didn’t warrant using the tag again. Also, Minnesota has not had a ton of cap space to work with this offseason, anyway.

So now, Harris is moving on. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Harris is signing a one-year, $5 million deal with the Eagles.

Harris’ smaller deal probably had something to do with the robust safety market this offseason, in addition to the salary cap crunch many teams are facing. Still Harris has a chance to return to his former self and earn a big payday next offseason.

It’s now a given that Minnesota will have to look for a safety opposite Harrison Smith. Smith remains one of the top safeties in the league, so there’s an argument to be made that position still probably shouldn’t be a major priority for the Vikings in free agency.
