Vikings face off against former offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur in Week 5

The Vikings will go up against a familiar face as they face the Giants in Week 5.

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur was with the Vikings from 2016-17. He was originally the tight ends coach in 2016, but was elevated to offensive coordinator after Norv Turner’s sudden departure. He also served that role in 2017 when the Vikings advanced to the NFC Championship.

In 20 games as head coach for the Giants, Shurmur has a record of 7-13. He was thrown into an odd situation with Eli Manning as the starter, even though everyone kind of knew that Eli Manning shouldn’t be the starter.

Now, the team has first-round pick Daniel Jones at the helm. Jones is 2-0 as a starter.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer is excited to go up against someone he calls his friend.

“Pat’s a good friend, good football coach,” Zimmer said Wednesday. “We appreciate everything that he did when he was here. He’s doing a nice job there, they’re sixth in the league in total offense. They’re doing a really good job, and it’ll be fun to go play.”

Kickoff is set for noon CT on Sunday.
