Vikings extend Rick Spielman’s contract through 2020 season

The Vikings and general manager Rick Spielman are avoiding a lame-duck situation.

Spielman’s contract was set to expire at the end of the 2019 season. Instead, he’ll be extended to the 2020 season, a timeline that matches coach Mike Zimmer’s timeline.

Spielman’s teams in Minnesota have compiled a record of 107-99-2 through 13 seasons.

The team has made the postseason five times, including two trips to the NFC Championship game, most recently in 2017.

Of course, if the Vikings underperform in 2019 like they did in 2018, this doesn’t necessarily mean Spielman or Zimmer’s job is safe. It’s just avoiding the constant media attention it would garner with them both in the last season of their contract.

Spielman has done a solid job through drafts of acquiring talent, but there’s always been one missing piece, whether it’s the quarterback, offensive line or kicker.
