Vikings exercise Mike Zimmer’s option for 2020 season

This doesn’t come as a huge surprise.

Vikings general manager Rick Spielman confirmed today that the team has exercised Mike Zimmer’s contract option for the 2020 season.

Zimmer has a 47-32-1 record in five seasons as the team’s coach with playoff appearances in 2015 and 2017. The team advanced to the NFC championship game in 2017.

This doesn’t ensure Zimmer, 62, will be the coach in 2020. If the team has a disappointing 2019 season, it could choose to fire Zimmer. But it avoids the “lame-duck” talk throughout the season.
