Vikings draft grade: Mississippi State CB Cameron Dantzler

Minnesota drafted a cornerback in the first round, but that didn’t stop it from taking one on day two of the draft as well.

The Vikings took Mississippi State CB Cameron Dantzler at No. 89 overall, the team’s first of two picks in the third round.

I like the choice of corner, but I’m not sure Dantzler was the best fit for the team’s secondary right now. I think since Amik Robertson was available, it makes sense to go and get him, especially if you’re the Vikings, a team that really only needs a nickel corner at this point.

Minnesota already has Jeff Gladney — one of the team’s first-rounders — Mike Hughes and Holton Hill, all of whom are capable of starting out wide if they’re able to stay on the field consistently.

To me, Dantzler might have more potential to play out wide and be a consistent starter due to his height, but he’s still pretty undersized for an NFL corner right now. And Robertson seems like he could be a very good nickel corner right away, and that’s all the team needs right now, considering the other corners on the roster.

I think Robertson is a player with less of a chance to become an elite corner, but has a better chance of being serviceable than Dantzler. Only time will tell whether Robertson or Dantzler has a better career, but right now, I give the nod to Robertson.

Grade: C+
