Vikings DE Danielle Hunter’s contract continues to look better and better

On Tuesday, the Seahawks traded defensive end Frank Clark to the Chiefs. With the move, Clark signed a five-year extension with an average of $21.1 million per season.

That has Vikings fans feel pretty lucky considering less than a year ago, the Vikings signed Danielle Hunter to a five-year, $72 million deal, with an average of $14.4 million per season.

For comparison purposes, Hunter has 40 career sacks and had a career-high 14.5 sacks last season (to be fair, that was the season after he signed his deal, so he’d likely get more had he waited).

Clark has 35 career sacks, including 13 last season.

Hunter ranked as Pro Football Focus’ 16th edge rusher, while Clark ranked 18th.

These players are very comparable, and the edge probably goes to Hunter, who is still just 24 years old, a year younger than Clark.

Hats off to cap guru Rob Brzezinski on orchestrating a very good deal, and to Rick Spielman for offering it when he did. Fast forward a year, and it’s not clear if the Vikings would have been able to afford Hunter.
