Prime Video looks to be capitalising on the world of Norse history once again. They have ordered a new series from Michael Hirst, who is working as the executive producer and writer. The show is going to detail the story of Erik Bloodaxe, who is one of the most famous Viking warriors in history. As he fights to become ruler of Norway, his land is torn apart by shifting loyalty, betrayal, and war.

Viking Lore is A Popular Topic in the Entertainment Sector
Viking lore is becoming a hot topic in the world of entertainment. God of War, for example, followed an antihero as he travelled through Midgard to Jötunheim. The game rewarded those who chose to read the runes in the caves, referencing the Poetic Edda. With wiki tabs and photographic opportunities, it helped to build a lot of historical accuracy into the experience.
You also have games like Treasures of Mjolnir, one of the online slots at Paddy Power. This is a slot based on Norse mythology, with the core theme being Thor’s legendary hammer. A Viking-themed soundtrack also carries the gameplay. Viking lore goes way beyond television and gaming, seen in numerous heavy metal bands, for example, who draw influences from ancient battles of the Viking era. Amon Amarth is one example, but you also have Wardruna, who play deer-hide drums with some of their many instruments, including the birch-bark flute, which is reminiscent of the era.
With the Viking theme being so popular in entertainment right now, it’s clear that Amazon is doing its research on what subscribers are looking for in a new series. Their new Norse saga is set to take place decades after the events of Vikings, but before Valhalla. MGM Television, which was an independent studio at the time, is now part of Amazon MGM Studios, with the company working with Prime Video to bring the show to life.

About the New Bloodaxe Television Series
At Amazon, Michael Hirst is also working on a historical drama, known as A Day of Fire: A Novel of Pompeii. Hirst has come out to say that he is incredibly blessed by the opportunity Amazon has given him, and the fact that he can now explore new characters and storylines is very exciting.
Through Amazon’s Bloodaxe television show, Hirst wants to open people’s eyes to the bigger scope of history, showing new and exciting angles that really delve into the way of life during that era. Although a lot of the details are being kept under wraps right now, we do know that the series is going to tell the true story of Eirikr Haraldsson, or Eric Bloodaxe. His wife, Gunnhild, the Mother of Kings, is also going to play a big role, with the show telling how he made his ascent to the throne. The series began filming on June 2nd in Ireland, with Xavier Molyneux playing Bloodaxe. Rod Hallet is playing Arthelstan, and Jessica Madsen is playing Gunnhild.
