Vikings are re-signing RB Ameer Abdullah

Due to their strong running back depth in 2020, the Vikings did not use Ameer Abdullah all that much. He played just 71 snaps on offense.

Now, though, Abdullah has a shot at a bigger role. With former Minnesota RB Mike Boone moving on this offseason, the third-string running back spot is open.

So the Vikings and Abdullah are staying together. The team is re-signing Abdullah, who was an unrestricted free agent this offseason, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Abdullah can also be a useful player in special teams, returning kicks for the Vikings this past season. However, I would expect his snap count to increase in 2021, especially if Alexander Mattison or Dalvin Cook go down with an injury.

Even in limited reps, Abdullah had two touchdown receptions on 58 yards receiving. He had just 42 rushing yards. Using Abdullah more in the offense could lead to a passing attack that involves the running back position more heavily.
