Vikings 2024 NFL draft scouting report: LSU DT Maason Smith

Welcome to SKOL Search!

This series will be your guide to the 2024 draft class. From scouting reports to mock drafts and exploring different scenarios, we will be covering the NFL draft and the future of the Minnesota Vikings from all angles.

The focus of the draft class in this space will be on the Vikings’ major needs at quarterback, running back, defensive line and edge rusher. We will also focus on wide receiver since it’s a loaded class and an increased chance to get a Stefon Diggs-type steal in the later rounds.

The Vikings are slated to have 9 picks going into the NFL draft and they need to make the most out of them.

Background

Matthew Hinton-USA TODAY Sports

Maason Smith

  • LSU
  • Height-6050
  • Weight-306 lbs
  • Third-year Junior
  • 5-Star recruit per 247 Sports
  • Stats: 47 tackles, 22 solo, 9.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, 2 passes defended
  • Games watched: Florida State 2023, Arkansas 2023, Florida 2023

Strengths

Has some incredible length for the position. Possesses 35″ arms and knows how to use them when engaged.

When he is engaged, Smith has a lot of power in his upper body. Holds up well at the point of attack and can use his upper body to drive back blockers.

Has a quick get off of the ball and can penetrate the interior quickly.

Weaknesses

His height can be a deterrent. Doesn’t always get the best leverage on the line.

Struggles to fight off double teams. Will get stood up in double teams and doesn’t consistently beat them.

When his pass rush move doesn’t land, Smith doesn’t have the requisite counters to make it happen.

Suffered a season-ending knee injury in week one of 2022. He also was suspended for week one of 2023 for an NIL violation.

Overview

Quickness/Penetration 15.7/20
Power 7.9/10
Pass Rush Moves 7.5/10
Counters 6.4/10
Leverage 6.6/10
Tackling 7.2/10
Size/Length 9.3/10
Run Defense 7.0/10
Awareness 7.1/10
Grade 74.9/100 Fourth Round

Smith is a fascinating prospect and has a lot of potential to be a really good 5T/3T. He will need a lot of work to get there but at the end of day two/beginning of day three, he’s worth a shot.
