Viking Sky: Terrifying moment emergency alarms sound on stricken cruise ship

Dramatic video shows the moment an alarm sounded onboard the stricken Viking Sky cruise ship off the coast of Norway.

Officials have confirmed that 16 people were injured - three of them seriously - after the vessel became stuck due to engine failure.

A clip posted on Twitter purportedly shows bemused customers onboard the Viking Ocean Cruises ship as the drama began to unfold.

Several people are seen glancing around anxiously as the seriousness of the incident becomes clear, and people are told to sit down.

A male crew member is seen telling people: "Please just remain seated."

Another female worker can be heard saying: "Everybody sit. Please stay seated."

At that point an automated message cuts in over the tannoy. Before the video comes to an end, the message says: "This is the general emergency signal."

After the clip was posted, many on Twitter praised staff for their response.

One person wrote: "Ooh that's scary, the crew did a great job with keeping them calm, you don't want people falling."

Another wrote: "I'm shaking... this is very terrifying and I really hope everyone is okay."

Viking Sky: Stricken cruise ship being towed to shore after three engines restart

Police in Moere og Romsdal said the ship's crew had managed to anchor in Hustadvika Bay, amid fears the vessel would run aground.

Some 230 people were registered at a reception centre after being airlifted off the vessel, with 16 taken to hospital, three with series injuries.

The boat will be towed to the city of Molde, on Norway's west coast, on Sunday morning, authorities said.

Footage online appeared to show the ship rocking dramatically, with debris falling from the ceiling and furniture including chairs sliding across the floor as passengers sat waiting to be rescued.

Derek and Esther Browne, from Hampshire, said the "whole boat was swaying, it was very rough" before they were airlifted to safety.

Mr Browne told BBC Radio 5 Live's Stephen Nolan: "We had a few people on stretchers, several with cuts, two with broken limbs, but fortunately we were alright. We were airlifted onto the helicopter which was quite a frightening experience."

He added: "I'd never been in a helicopter before, there were a lot of high winds, hovering overhead and the winchman came down and we were then collected up and so I shut my eyes as we arrived into the helicopter and there were 15 of us for about a 20-minute ride."
