VIJAYAWADA: More than 40 places have been identified as hotspots for cockfights under Vijayawada police commissionerate limits. The places have been listed by the city police based on the history and cases registered under respective police stations.
Vijayawada police commissioner Kanti Rana Tata issued directions to the unit officers to take stringent measures to prevent cockfights at these hotspots.
Certain places under Kankipadu, Penamaluru, Pamidimukkala, Thotlavalluru, Vuyyuru rural and Ibrahimpatnam police stations were identified after maximum number of cases were reported in the past. Areas like Edupugallu, Uppuluru, Godavarru and Gosala under Kankipadu police station limits are known for cockfight events every year during Sankranti. Organisers used to set up huge arenas in the open fields in the guise of holding Sankranti celebrations.
Thousands of people used to turn up at these places to participate in cockfights. Kapileswarapuram, Chagantipadu under Thotavalluru, Ferry, truck terminal near Ibrahimpatnam, Murthirajugudem Donka Road, Chinthalathota under Vuyyuru, Chodavaram, Yanamalakuduru, Pedapulipaka Road, Poranki open fields under Penamaluru, Meduru and Mullapudi open fields under Pamidimullala mandal are some of the places identified as notorious for cockfights with large scale gambling and betting activities happening.
Kanti Rana issued directions to the unit officers not to allow anyone to set up cockfight arenas at these places. The city commissioner said that they will take every action to implement high court orders with regard to cockfights.
As the Covid-19 cases are also on the rise, we will take more stringent steps to prevent gatherings especially the cockfights, he said.
