VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is preparing its summer action plan to prevent water scarcity in hilly terrains and the city outskirts. The civic body has decided to spend around ₹5 crore to overcome drinking water scarcity in summer.
Mayor Rayana Bhagyalakshmi along with minister Vellampalli Srinivas held a meeting with authorities and discussed the challenges faced by the VMC in drinking water supply during summer.
Water works authorities said that around 11.3 feet level water is maintained at the barrage which is enough for water supply in summer.
Officials are directed to restore damaged water pipelines at hilly terrains to supply water to every household without any hassle. Focus is on One Town, Gunadala, Moghalrajapuram, Machavaram hilly terrains to prevent water scarcity.
The minister directed the officials to arrange water tankers to supply safe drinking water to the people residing at Jakkampudi and other city outskirts in case of interruption in water pipelines. One the other hand, the civic body has decided to restore 12 old borewells on canal bunds in the city. The engineering wing has decided to restore lifting motors in Maruthi Nagar and other areas to boost water supply in peak summer.
“We are monitoring the temperatures in the city and taking information from Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA). We will ensure that stalls will be arranged on streets to provide drinking water and buttermilk. Water supply will be a big challenge and we will overcome it with perfect planning,” said the mayor. Pipeline restoration works have begun at hilly terrains in Chittinagar, Mallikarjunapeta areas in the city with an estimated cost of around ₹2.3 crore, the mayor added.
