Vijayawada civic body steps up sanitation drives to improve Swachh Survekshan rank

VIJAYAWADA: Ahead of Swachh Survekshan rankings, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation authorities have intensified sanitation drives.

The civic body which is aiming best rank has started taking action against sanitation supervisors who are negligent in their duties. Eight sanitary inspectors and supervisors were given charge memos for their failure in maintaining sanitation in the last ten days and even officials in the engineering wing were suspended for negligence.

Vijayawada, which achieved third clean city rank in Swachh Survekshan-2021, is facing difficulty in protecting its rank this year. The VMC is facing tough competition from Greater Vishakapatnam and Tirupati in Swacch rankings. While Vishakapatnam is currently all-India first in performance indexes, Tirupati is in the ninth position.

The city is presently fifth in citizens’ feedback category and also faces issues in controlling open urination and garbage dumping at canal bunds and open places. Door-to-door segregated garbage collection has become namesake in many areas and people continue to dump waste on streets.

Commissioner Swapnil Dinakar swung into action and started week-long campaigns on cleanliness.

“Clean and green city is our vision. We should work collectively to improve the Swachh ranking and make the city healthy and climate-friendly. We will not tolerate any negligence,” mayor Bhagya Lakshmi told TOI.
