PMK founder S Ramadoss on Thursday said that if actor Vijay Sethupathi announces that he will not act in Sri Lankan cricketer Muthiah Muralitharan's biopic titled 800, he will part of Tamil Eelam history or else he would be known as a betrayer.
In a statement, he said even though explanations has been given that Vijay Sethupathi is acting in the film on Muthiah Muralitharan’s sporting achievements, the suspicion is that it would depict Rajapaksa brothers in a positive light.
“I respect the creative freedom of Vijay Sethupathi. But, that freedom should not be used to shame the motherland. I am not going to urge him to drop his plan of acting in the film,” Mr. Ramadoss said.
Seeman condemns
Naam Tamilar Katchi chief coordinator Seeman on Thursday urged actor Vijay Sethupathi to back out from acting in Sri Lankan cricketer Muthtiah Muralitharan's biopic titled 800, "respecting the sentiments of Tamils across the globe."
In a statement, he alleged Muralitharan acted against the interest of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka and is a proxy to the country's ruling Rajapaksa family.
“Filming a biopic on Muralitharan would be against the spirit of struggle for freedom of Eelam. Acting in the film is not good for Sethupathi’s acting career and it would affect his future prospects,” Mr Seeman felt. If Sethupathi thinks the film can be released on OTT platforms, instead of theatres, it would affect the release of his other films, he warned.
Mr Seeman claimed that the biopic cannot be thought of as just a film and he is opposing tthe film because of the “political dangers” involved behind it. “It can’t be said Sethupathi was not aware about the sentiments and statements made by Muralitharan. Going ahead with the project is condemnable,” he added.
