Vigils to be held across Ireland in memory of Ashling Murphy as tragic killing shocks the country

A candlelit vigil in memory of Ashling Murphy was attended by hundreds of people in Galway on Thursday evening with many more vigils set to take place across Ireland on Friday.

The memorial event in Eyre Square was organised by NUI Galway Students’ Union and saw members of the public place flowers and candles underneath a picture of the murdered primary school teacher.

Musicians also gathered in the square to play traditional Irish tunes in memory of Ashling who was a talented trad musician.

Ashling was jogging along the canal bank in Tullamore when she was randomly attacked and killed in broad daylight on Wednesday. A man aged in his 40s has been arrested in connection with her death.

Her tragic death has caused shockwaves in her local community and across the country as thousands of people shared an outpouring of grief following her killing.

Hundreds are expected to attend special vigils for Ashling in Irish cities, towns and villages over the weekend with many taking place at 4pm - the time when the 23-year-old was brutally killed.

The National Women’s Council of Ireland has organised a socially-distant vigil outside Dail Eireann on Kildare Street in Dublin from 4-5pm on Friday.

People are encouraged to bring flowers and candles while wearing face masks and join the call for an end to men’s violence against women at the event.

Vigils are also being organised in Tullamore, Cork, Limerick, Belfast, Tipperary and other counties.

The Director of the National Women's Council, Orla O’Connor, said her thoughts are with all who knew and loved Ashling following the "unspeakable crime".

"It should go without saying that a woman should be able to go for a jog in broad daylight and return home safely, and yet we know women are not safe in our homes and in our communities," she said.

"We need a total change in culture to end men’s violence against women and to ensure that women are safe.”

People who would like to pay their respects but can’t attend a vigil in person have been asked to light a candle in remembrance of Ashling at 4.30pm.
