Vigil's Martin Compston breaks silence on twist in new BBC drama

Vigil is the brand new BBC drama set on a submarine featuring Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie and Martin Compston.

It follows an investigation after a crew member is found dead onboard the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, only the submarine stays on patrol as the UK's nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken. Don't reader any further if you want to avoid spoilers.

The series premiered over the bank holiday weekend on Sunday, August 29 but the thriller shocked viewers by killing off Line of Duty star Martin's character Craig Burke within just eight minutes.

The reaction from viewers on social media was tremendous with many left inconsolable that one of their favourite actors may no longer be appearing in the rest series. You can read more on this here.

And following the episode, Martin himself has now broken his silence, speaking out about what it was like to play a "red herring part" in a series.

He said: "We were about to start shooting Line of Duty series six, and I was having dinner with Simon Heath, who's the executive producer on that and Vigil.

"Out of the blue he mentioned that World Productions and the BBC had this wonderful 'red herring part' coming up on a new series that everyone was really excited about, Vigil, and he said to me 'Do you want to do it?'

"When Simon told me the cast already on board and the idea behind Vigil, it all really appealed and I think I said 'yes' there and then.

"There were six or seven days before I was due to start work on Line of Duty when Vigil was also filming, so I spent them up in Glasgow on the HMS Vigil set." You can read more about Vigil's location here.

Unsurprisingly, Martin had to keep the twist a secret, keeping it from family and friends.

He explained: "I've not told a single soul. You just can't give these things away - nobody wants a spoiler, and I wouldn't want to kill the surprise for anybody.

"Even my family and people close to me who knew I wasn't away filming Vigil for very long, I just told them I had a 'limited' role. Alongside Vigil's cast and premise, this was another element that attracted me to the role of Burke - I found it intriguing to be the surprise death for once.

Burke died within the first 10 minutes of the first episode of Vigil leaving viewers shocked (BBC/World Productions.)

"I was chuffed to be asked. What I found especially intriguing was that Burke dies and - just when you think you've seen the last of him - it turns out that, no, he's still got more to give and more to say and he's made it so he hasn't gone down without a fight.

"When he appears back at the end of episode one on the recording, it's a real wow moment I think."

The third episode in the six-part series will broadcast on Sunday on September 5.
