Vigil held for Yusuf Sonko on what would have been his 21st birthday

People gathered for a moving vigil for murder victim Yusuf Sonko on what would have been his 21st birthday on Thursday .

Balloons were put up and messages fixed to the spot where the teenager was murdered in Tiber Square, Lodge Lane.

Yusuf died after being shot in the head on June 2, 2017. Despite repeated appeals from police and his grieving family, no-one has been brought to justice for the brutal killing.

In an open letter, his parents Khadija and Papice said: "We are writing this letter to appeal to you, to our community members to come forward with any information to bring the killer of Yusuf to face justice.

"My family is broken, our hearts are broken, we will never be able to celebrate with Yusuf any more birthdays, festivals or welcome in the New Year, we will never know what his future life would have brought him, and we will never see him grow into a mature man.

"We are appealing to you mother to mother, father to father, sister and brother, please help us, please come forward with information.

"Our community must break this wall of silence, it just takes one person to do the right thing. Put yourselves in our position, what would you want if it was your child or family member that was killed?

"Please come forward, speak to the police and please bring us some peace."

A fundraising event in memory of Yusuf is due to take place on Saturday, March 7 at the Liverpool Caribbean Centre in Upper Parliament Street.

All proceeds raised through ticket, food, and raffle sales will be donated to the local community village in Senegal which Yusuf last visited in February 2017. Children are welcome between 7pm-9pm and the event will then continue until late.

*Anyone who witnessed the incident, or holds any information, is urged to contact Merseyside Police via Twitter (@MerPolCC), by calling 101, or leaving information, anonymously, with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or  online
