Vigil fans forgot Martin Compston was in it as they joke it's the 'easiest paycheck ever'

BBC's hit drama Vigil came to a conclusion on Sunday night.

Fans were glued to their box as the gripping six-part drama came to an end and they now face a wait to see whether there will be a second series on the way.

The drama was created by the producers of Line of Duty and Bodyguard and centred around a Scotland-based detective called Amy Silva, played by Suranne Jones.

The DCI was tasked with boarding a nuclear-powered naval submarine after one of its crew members died in mysterious circumstances.

After spending the last five episodes trying to track down the perpetrators, the penultimate episode saw her trapped inside a torpedo tube.

Perhaps expectedly, the final instalment saw her escape the precarious situation.

However, it was the return of Martin Compston that got people talking on social media.

Viewers flocked to Twitter to mock the star's reappearance after he was killed off early in the first episode.

One user tweeted: "I'd forgotten Steve Arnott was ever in this, to be honest. #Vigil"

Another wrote: "Completely forgot Martin Compston was in #Vigil yanno - it was brief as f**k lol"

"Easiest paycheck Compston will ever make #Vigil" penned a third.

And a fourth commented: "At least we got to see @martin_compston again at the end x Fab series #Vigil"

While there were mixed reviews from onlookers about how the series ended, some claimed it was a "stressful" watch, while others thought the ending was "predictable".

As DCI Silva screamed for someone to come and save her from the torpedo tube, the scenes became more and more intense as she started struggling to breathe.

Despite wanting to see how the series ended, fans of the drama found it hard to watch - especially those who are claustrophobic.

A second viewer tweeted: "I don’t know why I do this to myself and watch #Vigil it gives me the worst anxiety."

A third person wrote: "Never felt as claustrophobic as I do watching #Vigil," while a fourth added: "I am not enjoying this. The stress! #Vigil."

And another put: "Little bit let down by the ending to be honest. All seemed very rushed but glad she got out of the tube. #Vigil."
