Vigil: Emotional viewers thank BBC for sapphic relationship representation

Viewers of the hit BBC Vigil drama have emotionally thanked the show's producers for showing a sapphic relationship proving just how crucial representation is.

During episode four of the mini-series, viewers saw a kiss between Suranne Jones' character DCI Amy Silva and Rose Leslie's character, DS Kirsten Longacre.

Both Silva and Longacre are investigating the murder of partners Craig Burke and Jade in what they believe to be a massive cover-up by some high ranking officials.

In Sunday's episode (September 12), Amy confronted one of the crew with her discoveries about their deception however after a drill which Silva thought was real, the crew are now questioning her stating that she's 'crazy' and therefore not fit to continue the investigation.

Rather convenient as she is getting closer to exposing the truth, huh?

Viewers were thrilled with the portrayal of a lesbian relationship on the show with many of them thanking BAFTA-nominated Film & TV Director, Isabelle Sieb.

One wrote: "Thank you so much for writing such a great sapphic storyline in #Vigil the representation means everything."

Another said: "Every time I see a sapphic couple on mainstream tv my heart races it just makes me so happy to see people who love like...yes I did just watch vigil."

A third added: "The fact the focus isn’t on them being a sapphic couple and rather them just happening to be two women who are together makes this more personal #vigil"

"Omg omg omg we got a kiss! I repeat we got A KISS," wrote another.

One person tweeted: "In all my life I never thought I would see myself represented on the BBC, let alone the prime time slot. and yet, a sapphic kiss /and/ a sapphic relationship? it's me! I'm real. I exist! So thank you #vigil, Suranne, and thank you for allowing me to be represented!"

Another Twitter user added: "Goodnight everyone I'm going to re-watch tonight's ep but just know I'm so happy i could actually cry my heart is so full I love being a lesbian and having my sapphicism recognised in the media THIS IS HOW WE WIN #Vigil".
