Viewers think the BBC’s Worzel Gummidge is 'creepy' and 'looks like Freddie Kruger'

The BBC adaptation of Worzel Gummidge aired on Boxing Day, and lots of people came to the same conclusion – that the scarecrow had an uncanny resemblance to Freddie Kruger.

The story, featuring The Office’s Mackenzie Crook in the title role, aired the first episode of the Christmas special on Boxing Day.

And thanks to the make up and prosthetics that Crook wears for the role, some viewers found the look "creepy", as Manchester Evening news report.

The two-part drama, which concludes tonight, has received positive reviews for the adaptation, based on the classic children’s books by Barbara Euphan Todd and follows a scarecrow on Scatterbrook Farm who comes to life and befriends local children.

But some just can't get past the chilling similarity to horror character Kruger, played by Robert Englund.

The first episode, called The Scarecrow of Scatterbrook, saw Worzel shock two local youngsters, Susan and John, when he meets them for the first time.

The episode on Boxing Day, The Green Man, introduces the creator of scarecrows who is not happy that Worzel is hanging around with humans.

The story was originally brought to the TV between 1979 to 81 when Doctor Who star Jon Pertwee took the lead role - and as you can see below he looked a lot different.

Another character, Aunt Sally, played by Vicki Pepperdine, also had a more sinister look.

One viewer tweeted: “Why have they made him look like Freddie Kruger. Creepy as. He is supposed to be a loveable character not the stuff of nightmares!”

Another raged: “What the f**k have they done to worzel Gummidge another show that's going to ruin my childhood. New one looks like Freddie krueger to the original.”

A third mused: “Watched #WorzelGummidge it wasn't as good as the one from my childhood, I did still enjoy it, though a little creepy, does anyone else think Worzel looks like Freddie Kruger?”

Another said: “I am actually a little terrified of worzel gummidge looking like a descendant of Freddie Kruger with a questionable West Country accent.”

A fifth posted: I'm sorry - but the new Worzel Gummidge is terrible. He looks like Freddie Krueger,  and what have they done to Aunt Sally? Leave the classics alone!”

Worzel Gummidge: The Green Man will air on Friday, December 27 at 7pm.
