Viewers shocked at 'extremely uncomfortable' scene in new Sarah Lancashire drama The Accident

Dozens of shocked viewers have taken to social media after an 'extremely uncomfortable' scene in the new Sarah Lancashire drama The Accident

The Channel 4 series sees the affect a disaster has on a small community, fictional Glyngolau, and the families who have lost children.

Sarah Lancashire plays the wife of a councillor in charge of the development project where an explosion takes place.

Several children are killed and injured but one of the most uncomfortable scenes of the first episode of the series came somewhat unexpectedly.

Lancashire's character rows with her husband as he refuses to go to the hospital to visit their daughter. She simply says 'not the face' before a disturbing episode of violence ensues.

After he's finished the beating she hugs him, comforts him and leaves the house.

After the programme was aired dozens of people took to social media to voice their shock at the scene.

One person wrote: "This is such uncomfortable viewing.... WTF."

While another said: "Im so confused. Why’s he just punched her several times n is now cuddling her? Helloooo have I missed something #TheAccident ."

And someone else wrote: "What concerns me is how they can let a man BEAT a women and then her hug him for it after ?! WHAT ?! Are you trying to teach women it’s normal to be beaten."

The Accident airs at 9pm on Channel 4 on Thursdays. (Catch-up on All4).
