Susanna Reid breaks down as she interviews parents of hero who died in River Thames

Susanna Reid broke down on Tuesday's Good Morning Britain as she interviewed the parents of a man who drowned in the River Thames over the weekend and told them "my heart is absolutely broken for you".

Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole, known to friends as 'Jimi', was one of two men who jumped into the River Thames just after midnight on Saturday to try and save a woman in the water.

Jimi, 20, was coming home from work when he and a friend jumped into the water after telling police about the incident.

But tragically he died in the river, with rescuers finding his body six hours later, while his friend and the woman were both saved.

Michael Adewola, 63, and mum Olasunkanmi Adewole, 54, said they were heartbroken by their son's death and were proud of him for trying to save the woman's life.

The 20-year-old's heartbroken parents appeared on GMB via video link, while Susanna and her co-host Adil Ray welcomed Jimi's best friend Bernard into the studio.

As Jim's dad spoke about his beloved son, he said: "I want the government to honour him because the boy, Jimi was a good son to me.

"He was the breadwinner of the house and he was also taking care of us," he added.

Susanna struggled to get her words out as she told them: "My heart is absolutely broken for you as parents", with the star breaking down as she fought back tears.

Viewers tuning in at home found it heartbreaking to watch as Jimi's parents broke down.

"Wow this is hard to watch so sad #GMB," one person tweeted, while another added: "Jimi’s mum looks completely broken #gmb."

A third person posted: "Oh Jimi Red heart you hero. I am sobbing for you, I’m so sorry for to his families loss. Can’t believe it. #gmb."

Susanna and Adil then spoke to Bernard, who was there on the night that Jim jumped into the River Thames to rescue a woman.

As Bernard recalled what happened on the night, he broke down in tears as he confirmed what a wonderful, caring person Jimi was.

Jimi's dad Mr Adewola previously told The Sun : “He is a hero, and always will be, I can’t bring him back but I want him to be remembered forever for what he did, it was just like him to want to always try and help others.

"Jimi was a very nice, kind young man, he was the heart of our family... He would help anyone that needed it.

"I don’t think I would be able to do it, I might be able to call the police, but I don’t know if I could do it, but this was Jimi, you can’t even describe the kind of heart he had."

After Jimi's death, his grief-stricken family claimed search teams gave up too quickly.

In an interview with Sky News the parents said they now want 'justice' for their son.

Mrs Adewole said: "I feel bad, because my son was trying to rescue a woman. I feel so bad.. and I want people to help me. I want justice for my son."

After paying tribute his dad said the hour-long search for Jimi in the water was "not enough".

City of London Police said officers arrived quickly and that the search was stood down after an hour.

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency reportedly said its search was suspended before Jimi was found.

Matt Leat, HM Coastguard's Strategic Maritime Commander, said: "Conditions were good for a search on the night, with a slow moving tide and a high volume of units from emergency services in attendance. It was determined where in the water the person could possibly be and each area was thoroughly searched multiple times.

"Despite our best efforts, the sad decision was made to suspend the search at 1.20am when no sign of the person was found."

A fundraiser launched in the wake of his death has so far raised more than £40,000, and can be accessed here.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
