Viewers in 'tears' as Neighbours comes to an end after just under four decades

Neighbours fans described how they were in “tears” as Channel 5 aired the show’s final ever episode. The popular Australian soap, which has been running since 1985, concluded on Friday, July 29.

During Neighbours’ final episode, a number of famous faces from the show’s history returned to Ramsay St to make a cameo. This included Jason Donovan, Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce, Holly Valance, Natalie Imbruglia and Margot Robbie. You can read more about those who didn't appear here.

The final episode ended with Scott and Charlene being greeted by Paul, before Harold and others see them return. Susan Kennedy takes on the narrator role for the closing moments as she reads the opening of the memory book written about Ramsay Street. Toadie releases a big heart balloon which soars above everyone and then pops, showering them all in confetti.

Following the tear-jerking moment, fans took to social media to share their thoughts on Neighbours’ conclusion. One person wrote: “Have I watched neighbours in the last 20 years? No. Am I still watching the finale and getting emotional? Yes.”

Meanwhile, others questioned why the show was even ending. “How many people are watching Neighbours, I just keep asking why, why, why did it have to end?” Someone else agreed and said: "Why is Neighbours ending, don’t watch it any more but so many people love it, why"

Another person simply wrote: "You’ll be in my heart forever, Neighbours," accompanied by a heart emoji.

Perhaps summing up Neighbours as a whole, someone commented: "So many emotions, so many iconic scenes, brilliant cast....it was never just a soap, it was family, friends, comfort, nostalgia and feeling like home."
