Viewers in stitches over this hilarious coincidence on BBC News as journalist speaks out

People are losing it over this ironic coincidence on BBC News this morning.

Amid concerns over the petrol shortages in the United Kingdom, the BBC News team went straight to a petrol station in Stockport to do a live report.

However, viewers had a bit more to say about the reporter than of the story itself.

Some were quick to point out how fitting it was to send BBC Breakfast presenter Phil McCann to the scene, given the topic at hand.

One user said, “The correspondent the BBC sent to cover the petrol shortage this morning is called Phil McCann.”

Another user joked: “Are people stockpiling petrol, not according to Phil McCann. Now over to Sonny Spells for the weather.”

“PHIL MCCANN! On a fuel shortage story. @TheSimpsons couldn’t have written anything funnier than that. Well played #BBCBreakfast,” another wrote.

McCann himself got in on the jokes, quote tweeting one viewer’s comment with: “It’s like being back in year 9! #nominativedeterminism.”

He also shared a screenshot of his name on Twitter’s trending page. He said: “There are worse reasons to trend on Twitter…”

In response to the many jokers who asked had he filled his can, he simply responded to them all saying: “No that would have been panic buying.”

Someone pointed out that in the screenshot, it looked like McCann was in a boiler suit. He replied: “Take the mickey out of my name as much as you like but leave my coat out of it!”

The presenter has now gone viral as a result of the reaction, with the BBC even posting a report on it to their website. The headline reads: “Can anyone Phil McCann up with petrol?” It features

a clip of light-hearted McCann discussing the actual topic of the story, as well as laughing with fellow presenters about the reaction.
