Viewers divided as Normal People comes to an end on RTE

Fans are divided after the season finale of Normal People aired on RTE on Tuesday night.

The penultimate and final episodes aired last night and Twitter has been awash with differing opinions on whether or not the shows ending was a satisfying one.

The show ended with the main characters Connell and Marianne finally reconciling and living in Dublin as a couple.

The pair were closer than ever with Marianne even spending Christmas with Connell's family who seemed to accept her as one of them.

The finale was bittersweet however with Connell being accepted to study abroad in NYC and the fate of the couple left unknown.

A common opinion amongst most fans on social media was that the finale was emotional and heartbreaking.

Chris tweeted: "The Normal People finale has got me sitting on the landing in the dark with sad acoustic covers of songs playing."

Aoibhín referring to the finale said: "To say I was inconsolable at the end, I’m not even sure why but I cried for like 2 hours straight after."

Liz said: "I don’t want to be dramatic but I watched the normal people finale last night and am still in bed at 3pm today recovering from the emotional trauma"

Gavan added: " Late compared to most watching #NormalPeople on RTÉ, and had the ending vaguely spoiled on Twitter weeks ago, but I still feel like I’ve taken a left hook to the corona gut after that finale. Magic. Somebody please rub my hair"

A lot of fans reacted very positively to the finale and were able to look away from the heartbreak to tweet about their positive experience watching it.

Ger said: "Not the ending I anticipated which made me like the series finale even more. Fair play to all involvled."

Carol tweeted: "Tears for the finale. Which I’ve seen three times. I just can’t, it’s the perfect ending. Support and love strengthens even the weakest."

Following the finale many fans are waiting for an announcement that there will be a season two but cast and crew have already admitted that it's not in the works yet.
