Viewers devastated as RTE's Winning Streak cancelled amid coronavirus outbreak

Winning Streak will not be on our TV screens this Saturday night due to the coronavirus crisis.

Marty Whelan announced this morning that the show would not be able to go ahead this weekend at least due to the pandemic.

The TV host said: "No Winning Streak this week either. Have to keep our distance now."

One user replied to Marty: "No, there I was thinking what brave celebs would represent those winners."

While another added: "sorry to hear that".

It's a second blow to Marty Whelan after he learned on Wednesday that his hosting duties wouldn't be needed for Eurovision this year after it was cancelled.

The legendary TV host said it was "disappointing but understandable" that the show had to be axed.

A statement posted on the official Eurovision Twitter account explained they have been exploring their options over the past few weeks, but felt there was no alternative to cancelling the show.

It reads: "It is with deep regret that we have to announce the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam.

"Over the past few weeks we have explored many alternative options to allow the Eurovision Song Contest to go ahead.

"However, the uncertainty created by the spread of Covid-19 throughout Europe - and the restrictions put in place by the governments of the participating broadcasters and the Dutch authorities - means the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has taken the difficult decision that it is impossible to continue with the live event as planned."

A number of RTE shows could be in trouble due to the coronavirus outbreak with Fair City already being altered.

The popular soap will now air just two days a week with filming halted by the pandemic.
