Viewers have been left baffled at seeing Match of the Day host Gary Lineker interview former Transport minister Jo Johnson about Brexit at a People’s Vote rally.
The footballing legend had been revealed as the secret celebrity guest at the event, which was held at Methodist Central Hall, in Westminster.
Mr Linker spoke with Mr Johnson on stage in front of a crowd of attendees, asking him about Brexit during the march on Tuesday night.
In doing so, Mr Johnson took swipes at Theresa May and his own brother, Boris Johnson, in the process.
He said: “What we’ve learned over the last 24 months or so is that we’re never going to get a Brexit that matches in any way the fantastical promises, the false prospectus that was made during the referendum campaign.
“Nothing can ever match that false prospectus. The public is going to feel let down because they were, in a way, misled by the campaign’s commitments. It’s that realisation, really, that the public is going to be duped.”
Mr Lineker appeared to listen to Mr Johnson, before asking to hear more of his thoughts – much to viewers’ bemusement.
Sky News reporter, Alan McGuiness tweeted: “Not a fan of this new Match of the Day segment tbh”.
While Catherine Nicholson said: “On same night it emerges Theresa May’s clinched a draft #Brexit deal......1 of England’s best-loved footballers #GaryLineker & Boris Johnson’s brother are among those calling for a “#PeoplesVote” on the UK govt’s withdrawal deal.”
Heather Stewart also tweeted: “2018’s not getting any less weird is it?”
Ben Dean-Titterrell tweeted: “Gary Lineker interviewing Jo Johnson is a bit of a weird one.”
Some however praised Mr Lineker for appearing on a political stage.
One user on Twitter wrote: “Why not an ex-footballer? A lot more people will pay attention to an interview by Gary Lineker than with a news journalist.”
Mr Johnson had previously quit his position of Transport minister over Brexit policy.
The former rail minister said he decided to resign in advance of a deal because leaked plans showed Mrs May would "drown out" the voices od dissenters with a massive public relations campaign to get it through.
Labour MP David Lammy, Liz Saville Roberts MP and Layla Moran MP were also in attendance of the event.
