Viewers ask when dropped MasterChef final will be broadcast

Fans of BBC hit cookery show MasterChef have been left hanging after the series final wasn't aired.

The final show was dropped from the programming schedule on Friday following the death of Prince Philip, reports the MEN.

The Duke's death has dominated TV scheduling since the announcement, and triggered a flood of tributes from across the globe – with world leaders, foreign royal families, and charities hailing his life and legacy.

But MasterChef viewers were left wondering when the long-awaited final would be on TV, which was due to air on Friday, April 9 at 8.30pm on BBC One.

The final sees amateur chefs Mike Tomkins, Alexina Anatole, and Tom Rhodes battle it out to be crowned winner of the 17th series.

Thousands of devoted watchers of the cooking competition took to Twitter to complain about the BBC changing all of its output across both channels.

One shared: "I think it's a genuine shame that Prince Phillip's died, I really do BUT postponing the MasterChef final because you have the same rolling news programme on BBC1, BBC2, BBC Scotland AND BBC Alba though is ridiculous. Let people choose."

Another said: "It's sad and some may be upset, some may even be in mourning, but the important question is why are BBC1 and 2 both showing the same programmes?

"The majority of the 'nation' is not in mourning, the 'nation' actually wants to know who won MasterChef?"

A statement from the broadcaster on Friday afternoon said: "With the sad news that HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, has died, there is now special coverage across all BBC networks to mark his life of extraordinary public service and planned scheduling has been suspended.”

And the official MasterChef account later posted: "Following today’s sad news about HRH Prince Philip, tonight’s scheduled #MasterChefUK Final has been postponed."

The M.E.N contacted the BBC to see when the final will be aired, however a spokesperson said there is no news yet as to when it will be rescheduled. We will update this story as soon as we receive a date and time.

Meanwhile, Channel 4 chose to air its regular output on Friday night including Gogglebox, which left viewers divided.

The broadcaster has since issued a response, saying it had "a duty to offer an alternative to others" after the likes of ITV and BBC aired back-to-back coverage of tributes to Prince Philip.
