Strict new press regulations will take effect this month in Vietnam amid signs that its political leaders are alarmed by a trend towards more aggressive and enterprising journalism. A decree has been issued to the press, which is entirely state-controlled, that threatens punishment to journalists for articles thought to "deny revolutionary achievements". In recent years reporters have begun to shed light on poverty and health matters as well as corruption. International press freedom bodies, including the Southeast Asian Press Alliance, have criticised the edict. (Via seapa.org)
