Videos showing 'bugs' crawling out of strawberries might put you off for life

If you enjoy eating strawberries, you're going to want to stop reading right now because you might be about to be put off ever eating the fruit again.

TikTok has taught us many things we never thought we needed to know, but one trend we wish we could unsee is one where users claim tiny bugs come out of strawberries after they've been left to soak in saltwater.

Videos being posted online show users filling bowls with water and adding a good amount of salt and waiting for it to disolve.

They then drop in some strawberries straight from the container and leave them to sit in the water for anywhere between 5 minutes and half an hour.

Users say washing them with water isn't enough and you have to soak them in salt water instead before rinsing them off (callmekristatorres/TIKTOK)

Zooming in, they then show what they believe to be tiny little bugs walking around on the surface on the fruit - and it's enough to make your skin crawl.

After many of the videos proved to be inconclusive, people turned to a user who goes by @Thatnatchats for help.

She had already racked up millions and millions of views for her videos showing things like eyelashes and hair under a microscope, and demands flooded in for a close up of a strawberry to see if the theory was correct.

It's made people swear off strawberries for life (callmekristatorres/TIKTOK)

Slicing off thin layers from the surface, she puts it under the objective lenses to reveal what looks pretty undeniably to be little critters running around on the surface.

Captioning the clip: "Ya'll better WASH your strawberries", it's had more than 15 million views and left plenty of people a little freaked out.

One replied: "This made me not eat strawberries ever again."

Another wrote: "Half the time I forget to wash so thanks for ruining my day."

A third commented: "Well there goes my favourite fruit."

After seeing the clips, Lauren Gambrell tried it herself and shared the results on Facebook, with the post racking up 115,000 shares.

She wrote: "After nearly 25 years of living, TikTok taught me how to properly wash strawberries. They are FILLED with tiny bugs and tons of dirt!!"

Sharing a series on photos showing what was left behind in the water, she said: "Fuzz off the strawberries, dirt and maybe some buggies but I wasn’t keeping the water to search for them!"

If you're a strawberry lover, the good news is that if they really do contain bugs, you've been eating them for years and it's done you no harm.

The bad news is you now know about it.
