As the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve, partying residents kept at home by surging Covid-19 rates celebrated in unison.

The resulting display could be seen - and heard - for miles around.

With the Omicron coronavirus variant sweeping the nation, Manchester's official firework display was cancelled again.

Town Hall chiefs said current government guidance regarding the use of vaccine passports for large outdoor events would prove 'extremely challenging' to manage due to the public nature of the event.

But that didn't stop private households from holding their own displays.

The two-minute long video was shot at midnight by Andrew from a tripod on Werneth Low, which overlooks the city centre on the border of Stockport and the Pennines.

The display from midnight lasted for around 15 minutes in total.

He told how a couple of hundred people also gathered at the beauty spot to 'enjoy New Years Eve in a different way'.

Andrew, a video journalist for the Reach central video team, said: "I was up on Werneth Low Road, parked up looking over the city.

"It's a popular location for photographers because you can see most of Greater Manchester from it.

"It was busy with people too who wanted to enjoy New Year's Eve in a different way - a few people I spoke to came up for the first time that night.

"There must have been a couple of hundred up there at least.

"I think because the weather was fairly mild and the fact people were encouraged not to go to large gatherings due to Covid meant more people headed up the hills and outdoors, where you can be distanced from others - especially if you stay in your car with the windows up.

"When the fireworks went off, the main midnight ones lasted for about 15 minutes and they came from everywhere.

"All at once the sky was lit up with flashes of colour, and the noise was brilliant.

"There were also fireworks going off all night from various parts of the city - I was up there for about 3 hours in total, and you could see fireworks for pretty much all of that time."
