Video shows the true danger of black ice this winter in Wales

Black ice is something every driver worries about when the temperatures begin to drop.

The invisible patches of ice are often found on roads across Wales during the winter and can pose a real danger.

And one motorbike rider experienced it first hand on a busy road between Cardiff and Newport .

John Burns was riding his motorcycle along Seawall Road on Wednesday when he hit a patch of the invisible black ice.

John said he didn't spot the black ice (Twitter/@StraightTall)

John, 56, from Newport,  said: "I was a safe distance from the car in front of me and I saw the car go over the water, and I saw it coming up and I could hear the water spray in front.

"I was going to stop and go around [the water] but there was a car coming the other way.

"I went through the water no problem and with no slip. Then about 10 to 15 yards after it looks completely dry.

"As soon as I got out of that [the water] I gently accelerated and the front wheel started slipping and I hit the deck.

"The car skidded behind me and the black car just missed my hand."

The video footage shows what appears to be a dry patch of the road before John crashes and skids along the road.

John said he wasn't left badly injured and walked away with some bruising after the "pretty scary" crash.

John, who has been riding motorcycles for around a month, said: "As a new rider just always anticipate it. Just accept the worst.

"Just don't think that because the road looks dry does not mean there is no ice."

John said a number of other drivers stopped to help after he came off his bike, and he managed to track down one woman to say thank you.

He said because the crash happened "so quickly" he didn't take her name. But after reviewing his helmet-camera footage he managed to identify her and sent her a thank you card and flowers on Thursday.
