Video shows sound Cork seal appear to give fish to heron on banks of River Lee

Footage has emerged showing a sound Cork seal appearing to throw a fish to a heron on the banks of the River Lee.

The video, which was filmed by Matthew Scott, shows the playful mammal swim up to the bird as it hangs around some steps on Morrison's Quay.

It initially looks as if the seal is trying to startle the heron as it swoops in on a step below it, Cork Beo reports.

The bird jumps back before the mammal moves off with something left behind on one of the lower step.

The heron then goes over and picks up a fish before gobbling it seconds later.

Although it's possible the seal may have been trying to lure the bird, it makes no attempt to catch it and just glides off as it goes for the fish.

It appears seal-bird relationship in Cork has come a long way - two years ago another harbour seal was filmed eating a swan by Parliament Bridge!

Seals are generally considered avivores (bird predators), and tend to be opportunistic, so they have been known to try and snatch unsuspecting seagulls.

But that's definitely not what this fella was doing.....
