Video shows scary moment planes land at Bristol Airport during Storm Francis

A plane spotter has posted stomach-churning footage of pilots landing in 40mph winds at Bristol Airport.

Boarding a plane in the grip of a pandemic is nerve-racking enough - but passengers had the added stress of Storm Francis to cope with on Tuesday (August 25).

The video was shared by YouTuber Mraviationguy, who filmed "windy and wobbly landings and take-offs" from the tarmac.

He wrote alongside the video: "Winds were gusting up to 38 knots (43 mph) while I was filming.

"Outstanding professionalism by the crews as always in these challenging and unseasonal [sic] storms.

"No aborted landings on this occasion, just a handful of bumpy approaches and wobbly touchdowns."

One Ryanair flight can be seen rocking from side to side as the pilot comes in to land, with a backdrop of ominous grey clouds looming behind.

More than 700 people have watched the video already since it was posted yesterday (Thursday), with commenters describing the footage as "awesome."

Passengers coming in to land included those flying from Burcharest, Lanzarote, Tenerife, enduring turbulence as the aircraft hovered above the runway.

Wings of the planes can be seen swaying from side to side as they descend, but steady hands of the crew steer them all to safe ground.

Gusts of up to 60mph swept through Bristol as Francis struck, leaving a trail of destruction including fallen trees and broken roof tiles.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms is in place today (Friday) until 8pm, with the Met Office forecasting heavy rain and gusts of up to 29mph.
