Storm Erik latest: Moment British Airways plane is blown about as it tries to land in storm

A flight was buffeted by winds at Heathrow and had to swoop back into the air after struggling to land during Storm Erik.

The plane, travelling from Hyperabad to London Heathrow, tried to settle on the runway on Friday morning.

As it flies down it sways slight as gusts hit its wings.

Its nose then goes down and up just above the runway, before the pilot decides to change its trajectory skywards.

The British Airways jet then heads upwards and back to the skies.

In footage shared by Big Jet TV it was described as a “TOGA”, which is short for take off go around, and said: "Well done pilot!"

This is a technique used when an approach becomes unstable.

A spokeswoman for British Airways said: "Our highly skilled pilots regularly train to conduct the standard manoeuvre known as a 'go around'.

"The aircraft circled the airport and landed safely."

Storm Erik wreaked havoc around the country on Friday with gusts of up to 70mph in some areas.

It was named by Irish forecaster Met Eireann on Thursday.

A driver was killed in the storm after a tree fell on to his car.

The Met Office issued two weather warnings for Friday for strong winds across Northern Ireland and western Scotland until the evening.

It also issued one heavy rain in Scotland until Saturday afternoon.

A further wind warning is in place for Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and northern England until 3pm Saturday.
