Video shows moment WW1 hand grenade explodes in farmer's field

This video shows the moment a rusty First World War hand grenade was detonated in a farmer's field.

The device was pulled from the Leeds Liverpool canal at Bank Bridge, Tarleton, by a stunned magnet fisherman at around 4pm yesterday.

The hobby involves using large magnets to pull metal objects from rivers and canals.

Rob Trowler, 29, from Ormskirk , told LancsLive : "I was with my friend. It’s the first time I’ve magnet fished at that bridge but I magnet fish a few times a week.

"I realised about 10 seconds after pulling it out it was a grenade but it took a couple of minutes to be 100%."

Lancashire Police closed the road in both directions between Coe Lane and Carr House Lane, while the bomb squad were deployed to make the device safe.

Today a police inspector posted a video of the detonation on the Lancashire Specials Facebook page, saying: "Interesting one earlier. Nipped into Tarleton Police station as was off to attend a meeting at Headquarters.

"Spotted a log on the screen for a found grenade just down the road.

"Attended on foot and spoke with two magnet fisherman who had managed to fish out a World War 1 grenade.

"Cordon and road closure in place, EOD attended to remove the device. Who says meetings can't be exciting!?

"Here is a video of the grenade being destroyed by EOD in a nearby field.

"Big thanks to those who assisted and for the patience of those stuck in traffic!"

The grenade, known as a Mills Bomb, used by the British Army from 1915 until the 1980s, had a "danger zone" of around 100 yards and was designed to shower the enemy with shrapnel.
