Video shows moment staff evacuated from Royal Mail depot amid 'bomb threat' in Filton

A video shows the moment staff were evacuated from a Royal Mail depot in the early hours of this morning after a "suspicious package" was reportedly found (Friday, September 11).

The depot on Gloucester Road North in Filton was evacuated shortly after 2am and police were called to investigate.

Nearby businesses, including a Post Office depot, have also been evacuated due to what a spokeswoman for the company has described as a "bomb threat".

Searches are being carried out at depots in Filton and Bath and people are being urged to avoid both areas.

Video footage captured from outside the depot as it was evacuated show members of staff being forced to wait outside before emergency services arrived.

In a statement, a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “At 2.17am this morning we were made aware of reports of a suspicious package at the Royal Mail sorting office in Filton.

“Specialist officers attended and established the package could have been transported to the Bath delivery office.

“Searches are currently being carried out at both locations.

“We don’t believe there to be any risk to the public but ask people avoid the area while the searches take place.”

A Post Office spokeswoman added: "Police are investigating a bomb threat at the Bristol Mail Centre. This premises is owned by Royal Mail, not Post Office.

“We do have a nearby depot and staff have been asked by police to evacuate the area along with other local businesses.”

Royal Mail has been contacted for comment.
